Oceanside beach sessions under the pier and the pilings

Wide open sand, warm reflected light, and a north county pace.

Why Oceanside works

Oceanside gives you room. The beach is broad and flat, the sand runs for miles, and the wet shoreline mirrors the sky in the last half hour of light. Nobody is crowding you into the frame the way they do further south.

The pier is what makes it distinctive. The pilings form long receding rows that give a photograph real depth, and the light bouncing under the deck is soft and warm in a way that flatters everyone. It suits families with young children, maternity, couples, and anyone who wants a beach session without the crowds.

Sessions that fit Oceanside

Families with small children

Flat sand, no climbing, and the ocean to keep toddlers busy. This is the least stressful beach session in the county for a family with a two-year-old.

Maternity and couples

Reflected light under the pier is soft and warm at any hour, so maternity and couples sessions here do not depend entirely on catching a perfect sunset.

Beach portraits and headshots

The pilings and the open shoreline give portraits and outdoor headshots two very different looks a hundred feet apart.

Planning your Oceanside photo session

Best time of day

Sunset and the hour before it are excellent here, and starting about 75 minutes out gives us the pier while it is still bright and the shoreline as the light drops. That is not the only good window, though. The shade under the pier is soft at almost any hour, and early morning on this beach is quiet and lovely.

Tides and the pier

Low tide opens up wet sand for reflections and gives room to work between the pilings. I check the tide against your date before we settle on a start time.

What to wear

Light neutrals and soft blues against the sand and sky. Layers matter here: the coast is cooler and windier than a few miles inland, at any time of year.

Marine layer

Overcast is not a problem on this beach. Flat coastal light is soft and even, and a grey sky often makes a better family session than a hard blue one.

Oceanside session questions

How long is the session?

Family sessions run 60 minutes. Couples and portrait sessions run 30 minutes. Elopement and wedding coverage starts at two hours. Boudoir runs 60 minutes or more, depending on the location and the style you are after. Newborn sessions also run 60 minutes, but they are photographed indoors, at the studio or in your home.

When will we get our photos?

For most sessions your finished gallery is delivered within 72 hours through a private online gallery.

Will we get wet or sandy?

A little, and it is worth it. Bring a towel and a change for the kids and we will use the shoreline properly instead of keeping everyone back on dry sand.

Do you cover the rest of north county?

Yes. Carlsbad and the surrounding north county beaches are photographed on the same terms, so tell me which stretch of coast you prefer.
