La Jolla Cove sessions on sandstone and surf

The most photogenic stretch of the San Diego coast, and it earns the reputation.

Why La Jolla Cove works

La Jolla Cove packs more into a quarter mile than most cities manage in a whole coastline. Sculpted sandstone bluffs, tide pools, palm-lined lawns above the water, and a west-facing view that turns the last half hour of daylight into something ridiculous.

The variety is the real advantage. A single session can move from the grass at the top of the bluff, to the sandstone shelves, to the sand at the water line, and the three look like three different days. It suits extended families in town for a visit, maternity, seniors, and headshots that want a coastline behind them.

Sessions that fit La Jolla Cove

Extended family and reunions

The lawn above the cove holds a large group comfortably, and the bluffs are a few steps away when you want the ocean directly behind everyone.

Maternity and seniors

West-facing light means backlit sunset frames without fighting the sun, which flatters maternity and senior portraits more than any other setting on the coast.

Headshots and personal branding

Palms, stone walls, and soft coastal light make a distinctive alternative to a studio backdrop for professional headshots.

Planning your La Jolla Cove photo session

Best time of day

The last hour before sunset, without exception. The bluffs face west, so the light comes straight at you and the ocean does the rest.

Tides and access

Low tide opens up the sandstone shelves and the sand below the bluff. I check the tide chart against your date and pick the meeting point from there.

What to wear

Cream, sand, dusty blue, sage, and soft white. Flowing fabric photographs beautifully in the onshore breeze, which there almost always is.

Parking and crowds

Street parking around the cove fills early, especially on weekends. Plan to arrive 20 minutes ahead, and expect other people nearby. I frame around them.

La Jolla Cove session questions

How long is the session?

Family sessions run 60 minutes. Couples and portrait sessions run 30 minutes. Elopement and wedding coverage starts at two hours. Boudoir runs 60 minutes or more, depending on the location and the style you are after. Newborn sessions also run 60 minutes, but they are photographed indoors, at the studio or in your home.

When will we get our photos?

For most sessions your finished gallery is delivered within 72 hours through a private online gallery.

Will there be seals or sea lions?

You will see them, but I work south of the seal area and above it so they stay out of the frame. They pull a crowd, and the crowd is the real problem. Staying clear of it keeps your backgrounds clean and your session unhurried.

Do you photograph visiting families?

Regularly. Tell me which evening you are free while you are in San Diego and I will build the session around the sunset that night.
